HOW TO CHOOSE A TENNIS RACKET

How to choose a tennis racket

Discover how to choose the best tennis racket for you. Whether you're looking for a beginner tennis racket, or seeking a racket to give you the perfect combination of power, spin and control, let Wilson be your guide to finding the perfect tennis racket for every type of player.

Selection of tennis rackets

As one of the longest-running tennis equipment brands in the world, we know there are many different types of tennis players. Our job is to make a racket for each one of them. Wilson offers four key racket lines that each focus on a specific performance benefit: Precision, Feel, Power and Control.

Selecting the right tennis racket for your skill level

Before you can select the best tennis racket for your level of play, it’s important to understand two elements of racket construction: head size and weight.

Tennis racket head sizes

  • Oversize: 105" or larger
  • Midplus: 98" to 104"
  • Midsize: 85" to 97"

Tennis racket weights

  • Lightweight frame: 9 – 9.7 oz / 255 – 275 g
  • Medium frame: 9.8 – 11 oz / 275 – 310 g
  • Heavy weight frame: 11 oz / 310 g or heavier

Beginner tennis players

Players first learning the game of tennis should start with a light racket featuring a larger head size (oversize). This helps them make contact consistently while learning to rally and reduces arm fatigue.

  • Oversize head size
  • Lighter frame
  • More power

Wilson’s Ultra or Triad are great beginner rackets. See our beginner racket collection for more.

Intermediate tennis players

Intermediate players can reduce head size and add a little weight as they develop. This provides more control while retaining some racket power.

  • Oversize or Midplus head size
  • Medium weight frame
  • Less power from the racket, more control

Try Wilson’s Clash or Blade rackets.

Advanced tennis players

Advanced players typically use mid-size rackets that provide control, feel and precision.

  • Midplus to Midsize head size
  • Medium to heavy frames
  • Rackets optimized for control and feel — e.g. Blade or Pro Staff

Choosing a racket for your swing style

Shortened/flat swings favor rackets that produce power — beginners might prefer Ultra, advanced players Pro Staff. Modern, vertical swings favor control and feel — choose Clash or Blade.

Tennis racket construction

  • Larger headsize = more power; smaller headsize = more control
  • Lighter racket = more power; heavier racket = more control
  • Open string pattern = more power; dense string pattern = more control

Stringing rackets

Beginners/intermediate players and those with tennis elbow should use multifilament strings. Advanced players may use polyester. Typical starting tensions: multifilament 53–55 lbs. Higher tension = more control; lower tension = more power.

Racket grip sizes

Grip sizes are measured 0–5 (US sizes ~4.0–4 5/8). Most adult women use ~4 1/4 (grip 2) and men ~4 3/8 (grip 3). If unsure, choose a smaller handle and build up with an overgrip.

The leaders in racket innovation
